Republicans in Congress are so desperate to capitalize on the anti-immigration vote this fall that they are proposing to change the U.S. Constitution.

The effort to overturn the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S., is being championed in the Senate by GOP minority leader Mitch McConnell, (R-Ky.) the Republican whip, John Kyl (R-Ariz) and in a complete 180, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) (who once, in a galaxy far far away, supported bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform).

Mr. Graham told Fox News that “birthright citizenship was a mistake.”

“People come here to have babies,” said Graham. ‘They come here to drop a child. It’s called drop and leave. To have a child in America, they cross the border, they go to the emergency room, have a child, and that child is automatically an American citizen. That shouldn’t be the case. That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons.’”

The Hill reports that the Republican legislation is popular in the House as well, and has 93 co-sponsors. It is aimed at denying citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants.

Immigration-rights advocates were quick to respond to the proposal, and the Immigration Policy Center launched a web portal devoted to defending the 14th amendment.

Yet the likelihood of overturning an amendment that was adopted in 1868 and has been fundamental to American identity over the the last century and a half is unlikely. The amendment reversed the Supreme Court’s 1857 decision in the Dred Scott case that denied citizenship to African-Americans. Getting rid of the amendment would require the support of two thirds of both houses and would need to be ratified by three-quarters of the 50 states.

I thought that Republicans/conservatives/tea party people were in favor of upholding and defending the U.S. constitution. Every time someone comes up with a plan for gun control the Republicans start waving the 2th amendment. Well this new move (to overturn the 14th amendment) of the Republicans clearly shows that they are a bunch of hypocrites (blindly defending the 2th amendment while wanting to overturn the 14th amendment).
This new move to overturn the 14th amendment clearly shows that the Republicans/conservatives/tea party people don’t give a damn about the U.S. constitution except when it serves to their interests.

The 14th amendment is being abused and manipulated. The amendment was created to give America citizenship to slaves in the 1800′s. Not for people to sneak across a border and pop out a baby.

Over turning the 14 amendment wouldn’t need to be done if U.S. government followed the immigration laws instead of pretending it’s not a real issue. The statics tell us we have over 20 million illeals living in america and having children here. Something needs to be done and if that means the demecrates/right wing party members won’t take the problem seriously, then over turning the 14 admendment is one answer. I don’t care where illegals come from, it doesn’t matter. If they are here illegally then they need to leave. If you rob a bank they don’t just let you keep the money.

Sneaking into a country to have a baby so that it automatically becomes a citizen, sick, sick, sick. Now you can use its birth to stay in a country by no other way except giving birth to it. This is sick. Your baby will grow up knowing that this is why you gave it birth. God didn’t mean children to be born for this selfish mean.Your not having children out of love. Your having them out of selfish, deplorable means. But then instead of planting a seed and growing your food, its easier to plant a seed and grow a baby. This baby can get your food for you. You know someone had to grow the food that you had that baby get for you. What does God call taking what don’t belong to you? But then you aren’t, your baby is. This is an amendment that need to amended. By not amending this law you are using it to make thieves of babies.
