Obama Says He Is "Very Committed" To Immigration Reform, Will Start Working On It Soon

Between signing the stimulus bill into law and traveling to Canada, President Barack Obama found time Wednesday to fulfill a campaign promise: he went back on the air with the nation’s most popular Spanish-language radio host, Los Angeles-based Eddie “Piolín” Sotelo.

In addition to the usual jokes and amiable bantering, the phone interview produced a small bit of news that only The Associated Press’ Spanish-language service seems to have caught: Obama told Sotelo he would call on immigration leaders in the next few months to begin preparing “a draft” proposal for comprehensive immigration reform.

Update: NPR show Tell Me More posted audio of the original interview here. You can listen to it by pressing Play.

Obama said it is necessary to start working on reform now, because getting it passed will take time. But he said he was “very committed” to making it a reality.

“Necesitamos comenzar a trabajar en ello ahora. Va a tomar tiempo avanzar eso (la propuesta), pero estoy muy comprometido de que eso se concrete”.

From ImpreMedia’s news website

[The website of Piolín's station, La Nueva 101.9, doesn't feature transcripts or audio from past shows. The only version of the interview available online is in Spanish, and not having heard the original conversation, we prefer not to include lengthy direct quotations in English, which could be inaccurate.]

The president also said that getting new immigration laws passed will be difficult. Because the U.S. economy is in worse shape than two and three years ago, when immigration bills failed in Congress, he said it would be even more difficult to pass one now.

Obama called on pro-immigrant organizations to propose ideas on how to pass the reform through Congress. But, he added, before concentrating on immigration reform, he will focus on improving the system for legal immigration.

Since Obama took office, and in the middle of the economic crisis, pro-immigrant advocates have been waiting to hear concrete news from the White House on when the administration will begin to move forward on immigration reform. During his presidential campaign, Obama had said he would address the issue during his first year in office.

As one Los Angeles-based columnist wrote yesterday:

With good reason, (the activists) remind the president that when he was a candidate he promised he would fight to push an immigration reform to end, among other calamities, the raids and deportations that cause so much suffering because they break up our families.

…the new secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, said the deportation program must be revised. But so far the raids continue to terrorize entire communities.

Mr. Obama would do well to remember that ANY immigration system is only is good as the enforcement of its rules. His FIRST step should be to put the systems in place (eVerify, SS no match letters, U.S. Visit, improved processing for LEGAL immigrants) without which no immigration laws can function.

    • Deport Em

Obama would be a fool to take up immigration right now. Millions of Americans are out of work and need the jobs the illegals have stolen. States are going broke but still have to pay for the education, healthcare and welfare. The Dems have already shown their colors by stripping E-Verify out of the stimulas.

Asking illegal lovin groups like LaRaza to assist in reform is like asking an sex addict to create abstinence ideas. Geez, how stupid is that.

Any push for amnesty will fail just like the last time. Too many Americans have been victims of illegal immigration for too long.

    • Sergi

It is appropriate for those who would argue our “national security” is at risk in this argument, to find out who is here. By registering and creating a program to penalize those who have entered or overstayed and give them an opportunity to make it right by paying fines, taxes and adjusting to a legal status we can take a huge leap forward in this matter.
Thousands of families that contain one or more US Citizen are affected, and by honoring thier rights and the constitutional protection to family unity we uphold our tradition of family values.
We are simply deciding to spend money on enforcement that destroys our economy and creates more social choas or support a prison for profit model that is shameful and degrades our standing in the world as a “humane” nation.

    • Joe Public

Obama should work on getting immigration reform through Congress. This will lead to a better system, where those who are legalized pay taxes and get in line to become citizens. It has to be done and Obama will get it done – unlike Bush.

    • Borderman

Dpes anyone remember the last big amnesty in 1986? All the enforcement promises that were made to garner enough votes to get that amnesty passed. Employer sanctions was to have been the “cornerstone” of that amnesty. Fines were to have been so expensive and so certain that no employer could stay in business if he employed illegal aliens. Yeah right. The immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was a big lie. We were scammed in 1986 and will be again if another amnesty is passed. All amnesties do is encourage more of the same; an invasion by illegal aliens. Remember 1986! NO AMNESTY

    • Borderman

President Obama made promises in order to get elected. That is his problem. We should not stand for turning our sovereignty to another country. That is exactly what is happening. Are we too blind to see what is happening?

Immigration reform will never really happen. Politically, it cannot. Immigration, politically, represents a bowing down of the majority to a growing minority group who has historically been able to specifically define itself.
Reforms are realized only when they pave the way to universal realities: one of which in America is the right of an individual to pursue life, liberty and happiness.
      The key word is individual.
The debates over immigration reform get so sensationalized too quickly; it’s politically a dirty subject, especially with the economy.
What will need to take place is a new discussion that focuses on the rights and responsibilities of the individual in terms of behavior in this country, in contrast to an imaginary obligation this country has to fulfill the immediate needs of a highly fragmented minority group whose track record of complying with common law jingles behind it like a tin can tied to a cat’s tail.

Obama better realize that Americans don’t want AMNESTY, and ANYTHING that allows these ILLEGAL ALIENS to remain in this Country is AMNESTY!

Now I can’t say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

How about the BILLIONS the American taxpayers fork out for the ANCHOR BABIES, the schooling of them, the medical care and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How about the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS paid to jail ILLEGAL ALIENS for the crimes, then the cost to deport them. Does this help our economy?

Then you have these activist groups, the Catholic Church and the ACLU that want AMNESTY for these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It would be absolute suicide for this Country if AMNESTY were granted to the 20 million or so ILLEGAL ALIENS. We have more and more people out of work everyday and they want to add another 20 million to this Country? I say, “NO”!

If AMNESTY were ever granted to these 20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS, you can bet big money that 3 years from now, there would be ANOTHER 3-5 million ILLEGAL ALIENS demonstrating on our soil for AMNESTY.

An end MUST come to this illegal immigration. The perfect tool we have so far is E-Verify. It MUST be used by ALL businesses and Government Social Services. EVERY employee must be checked! If they are illegal, they are to be dismissed! Obama wants to end E-Verify. The very best tool we have, and he wants to end it?

I want to wish Obama the best, but so far he has made a few bad choices what with this TRILLION DOLLAR SPENDING BILL for one.

Then he decides to bail out irresponsible home buyers with our tax money! He certainly is generous with our money but not with his own money. His brother in Africa lives on one dollar a month and he sends him nothing! Don’t you find that ironic? Charity starts at home, not in the White House with OUR MONEY!

Now back to the ILLEGAL ALIENS. They are not part of the solution, they are part of the problem. They MUST go back to their home Country.

WELL,Obama is very wise man, he should take up the immigration issue now, ITS never a better time then this, Making impossible possible is what he should show everyone. Legalizing millions of people would ultimately help the economy, those illegals are already taking american jobs, so legalizing would atleast force them to pay taxes and buy capital, which would increase ECONOMY, think positive and AMERICA will prosper again GO OBAMA……..

    • fred

America can fight multiple foreign wars and keep military bases fully functional around the world, yet American borders can not be secured. millions of illegals get to stay and abuse taxpayer funds. the rich elite globalists that have not left to set up factories abroad now want slave labor in America. This may be the end of America.

    • Sasha

Obama is going to do good. He will make all legal Immigrants feel more comfortable and issue them all GC’s , this increases people investing on housing as they know they will settle down in the country. This also will let people setup new businesses that could open more job opportunities for Americans.
God Bless UNITED States – Land of Immigrants.

Why don’t we charge the illegal immigrants $5,000 or even $10,000 for amnesty. That would solve the illegal immigrant problem and help our community.

Undocumented immigrants paying more taxes than you think

Eight million Undocumented immigrants pay Social Security, Medicare and income taxes. Denying public services to people who pay their taxes is an affront to America’s bedrock belief in fairness. But many “pull-up-the-drawbridge” politicians want to do just that when it comes to illegal immigrants.

The fact that Undocumented immigrants pay taxes at all will come as news to many Americans. A stunning two thirds of Undocumented immigrants pay Medicare, Social Security and personal income taxes.

Yet, nativists like Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., have popularized the notion that illegal aliens are a colossal drain on the nation’s hospitals, schools and welfare programs — consuming services that they don’t pay for.

In reality, the 1996 welfare reform bill disqualified Undocumented immigrants from nearly all means tested government programs including food stamps, housing assistance, Medicaid and Medicare-funded hospitalization.

The only services that illegals can still get are emergency medical care and K-12 education. Nevertheless, Tancredo and his ilk pushed a bill through the House criminalizing all aid to illegal aliens — even private acts of charity by priests, nurses and social workers.

Potentially, any soup kitchen that offers so much as a free lunch to an illegal could face up to five years in prison and seizure of assets. The Senate bill that recently collapsed would have tempered these draconian measures against private aid.

But no one — Democrat or Republican — seems to oppose the idea of withholding public services. Earlier this year, Congress passed a law that requires everyone who gets Medicaid — the government-funded health care program for the poor — to offer proof of U.S. citizenship so we can avoid “theft of these benefits by illegal aliens,” as Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., puts it. But, immigrants aren’t flocking to the United States to mooch off the government.

According to a study by the Urban Institute, the 1996 welfare reform effort dramatically reduced the use of welfare by undocumented immigrant households, exactly as intended. And another vital thing happened in 1996: the Internal Revenue Service began issuing identification numbers to enable illegal immigrants who don’t have Social Security numbers to file taxes.

One might have imagined that those fearing deportation or confronting the prospect of paying for their safety net through their own meager wages would take a pass on the IRS’ scheme. Not so. Close to 8 million of the 12 million or so illegal aliens in the country today file personal income taxes using these numbers, contributing billions to federal coffers.

No doubt they hope that this will one day help them acquire legal status — a plaintive expression of their desire to play by the rules and come out of the shadows. What’s more, aliens who are not self-employed have Social Security and Medicare taxes automatically withheld from their paychecks.

Since undocumented workers have only fake numbers, they’ll never be able to collect the benefits these taxes are meant to pay for. Last year, the revenues from these fake numbers — that the Social Security administration stashes in the “earnings suspense file” — added up to 10 percent of the Social Security surplus.

The file is growing, on average, by more than $50 billion a year. Beyond federal taxes, all illegals automatically pay state sales taxes that contribute toward the upkeep of public facilities such as roads that they use, and property taxes through their rent that contribute toward the schooling of their children.

The non-partisan National Research Council found that when the taxes paid by the children of low-skilled immigrant families — most of whom are illegal — are factored in, they contribute on average $80,000 more to federal coffers than they consume. Yes, many illegal migrants impose a strain on border communities on whose doorstep they first arrive, broke and unemployed.

To solve this problem equitably, these communities ought to receive the surplus taxes that federal government collects from immigrants. But the real reason border communities are strained is the lack of a guest worker program.

Such a program would match willing workers with willing employers in advance so that they wouldn’t be stuck for long periods where they disembark while searching for jobs. The cost of undocumented aliens is an issue that immigrant bashers have created to whip up indignation against people they don’t want here in the first place.

With the Senate having just returned from yet another vacation and promising to revisit the stalled immigration bill, politicians ought to set the record straight: Illegals are not milking the government. If anything, it is the other way around.

We seem to have so many immigration laws now that we don’t have the number of officers needed to enforce these laws.
Why do we need another round of laws that can not be enforced?

I think the borders have to be locked off 100% so only authorized people can get through. Then, all illegal immigrants in the us should have 2 years to complete the paperwork and pay the fees. If they can not do it in that time frame – see ya later.

    • Victor Ordunez

I have a real problem with the phrase, “Anchor Baby”. It is very despicable when an individual speaks of children as if they where some secret tool that immigrant families use to stay in our country just to get his/her point across. I hate to break the news to these individuals, but illegal immigrants are here with or without babies.
These people may lack education, but they are not stupid. Illegal immigrants are aware that their children will not save them from deportation, and they live with this fear day in and day out. It is the fear of losing their families that gives them the courage to demonstrate and ask the government to act on their behalf.
I say they have the right to ask the people in charge for this help. Some people say “But they are here illegally and they broke the law!” That’s about the only law they broke. True illegal immigrants want to remain anonymous because they don’t want to be deported. It is only common sense.

The word reform doesn’t indicate the direction immigration is heading. The definition we should be looking for is “Control”. The immigration gate keepers have been sleeping at the switch. This is America and we have a culture and way of life that many before us fought and died for. Immigration numbers should be ENFORCED to the letter of the law. The flow should be controlled to allow the natural process of assimilation to occur. All you have to do is look around and see immigration is totally out of control. Entire communities of immigrants are being established in record time which negates any reason to assimilate and is leading to the colonization of America. “For the people, by the people, of the people” has always meant, the citizens of this country and not immigrants.

Everyone knows that Immigrants do not take jobs that Americans do not want. Americans do not want to work in the construction because it is either too hot or too cold. They also expect to get paid really well, but Immigrants do not mind working in the hot or cold weather for a low wage. They are just doing jobs that Americans do not want to do. Americans just want to do the easy jobs which are sitting down in offices and cashing in money not doing too much work. Who do you think have done the houses that you live in? The stores that go shopping at? The workplaces where you work at? Immigrants. The roofs that we all live in, have been done by Immigrants. They suffer a great deal in their home countries not having any way to feed their families and they suffer when they have to leave their families in order to migrate into another country to work.
Just leave them alone. They pay taxes like we all do, except that you don’t really know. You should do some research before speaking about that topic and complaining that they do not pay taxes or that they are taking our jobs.
I really do hope that President Barack Obama decides to do something on the Immigration reform and decides to legalize all those 12 million immigrants that are also part of the United States. Like they say, that thy only true americans are the Indian Native Americans that were here before the English immigrated and came to take this country from them. So guess what, all of those who are talking about Immigrants and being racist about it, you are all also immigrants. Ancestors that Immigrated from different countries and decided to settle in the United States of America built by IMMIGRANTS and for IMMIGRANTS. So you should do better to think before speaking about and complaining that Immigrants are taking our jobs. They are good people and you should get to know them and their history on how they immigrated and the reasons why they had to leave their families behind. -I really hope Barack Obama does something for all of them.

The U.S. corporations use illegal immigrants as slave labor and both the corporations and illegal immigrants are breaking the law. At a time like this, corporations still feel their bottom line is more important then what is good for America and that has to change.
The way of life that Americans have created, was based on dedication, determination, ingenuity and hard work. Many Americans have lived in this country for many generations, so their roots are right here, therefore this is their native country.

Whether or not this is realized, history tells us that people migrated from one location and spread all over the world so, we’re actually now all immigrants. As an example, at one time Germany was an unnamed and an uninhabited land. The people that migrated to Germany, were not Germans when they arrived, but became Germans after they developed villages, cities, borders, civilizations, societies and eventually laws.

So in 1776, America gained its’ independence from England and then went on to create, villages, cities, states with names and borders, a civilization and a society with laws. So we the people (born or naturalized) of these United States of America, are its’ citizens. And it is only the citizens of this country that have a vote and the government’s decisions must be made based on what is best for America and American citizens.

Immigrants that enter the U.S. illegally are breaking the law and should be deported. The U.S. government’s first duty is to the people of The United States of America and the government was created to serve, defend and protect the constitution and the American way of life.

Everybody is a pilgrim on the earth. If you were not an illegal, your mother or father was. If your mother or father was not, your grand father or grand mother was. If your grand mother or grand father was not your grand grand-father or grand grand-mother was or may be your grand grand grand grand grand grand grand(x10 father or mother)was an illegal. If the first inhabitants or the Pilgrims thought the same way people think now the Country would not be what it is today: a Great nation and a land of opportunities

As a USC, I strongly support an immigration reform Now and not tomorrow. I am very positive that our economy will definetly improve if these millions of illegal immigrants pay taxes. I completely advise the Congress to bring it to the floor as soon as possible. More importantly, if the reform ask the illegal immigrants to pay 10,000 dollars as a fine, I am sure they will do with smiles on their faces, and readers do your math, and you will find our economy alive again. Simple fix.

America being the biggest supper power has the responsibility to act in a manner like an elder brother or sister to all the nations of the world. A father or mother feels happy about an elder brother or a sister caring about their younger brothers and sisters. So is the heavenly father-mother going to be happy if America does like wise with the people and nations of this world. This is the surest and the fastest way for America to revive from a crushed economy.
“AS YOU SOW SO SHELL YOU REAP” is an ever lasting truth-a law, which works all the time. It works on every one and nations of world.

So,it is a must to change.

You can do the math if 10 million people will be paying $2000 each as a penalty to start the process how much $$$$$$$ we are talking about?

And don’t forget the taxes that illegal aliens have to pay every month. If each of them will be paying an average of $500 a month what will yearly taxes adds up to?

Mr Obama is a winner and we have to support him.

Yes we can do it and we will grow much powerful, prosperous and blessed then ever before.

If US citizens had done the small jobs …like cutting the lawns and cleaning the toilets then YES they can complain about the hard working immigrants that live in the USA! But they did nt! They left all the dirty jobs to the hardworking immigrants! It is time to help the immigration system and help the United States Economy…..both work hand in hand!!!
      1. Bring the immigrants out of the shadows and make them pay a fine – hence this will help the economy
      2. Fine the employers to let the immigrants carry on working for them and let them apply for greencards – this will help the economy as the Employer will pay the taxes and a fine and the immigrants will pay a fine too! Duhhhh!!!! Help the economy!!!!

Are some people so stupid that they cant see what our New President Obama is trying to do!!! Or is there another agenda ….i.e. race/color and creed??? Is this why so many are against amnesty?

lets face it most us citizens cant even plough an orange grove …why because this land was never theres…they stole it from the native indian and alot of the dececents of the native indian are the mexicans…..so lets not have other agendas why you dont want amnesty ….its a beautiful, flourishing way of making money for this great country everybody loves so much and dont want to see it hurting the way it is !!!!!!

Everything in life has limitations and immigration is no different. The Population growth rate has to be set to a level that does NOT to disrupt the economy, the culture, the standard of living and the way of life of middle America. That is and should be the government’s first priority. The natural process of assimilation is extremely important when considering a healthy population growth rate. That’s why there is a limit to the number of immigrants allowed in to the U.S. each year.
The number of illegal immigrants alone shatters that limit by millions per year at break neck speed, not to mention the legal immigration numbers that have gone far beyond previously set limitations. It would be wonderful to have big hearts and accept everyone that wants to become and American citizen, but growth rate, whether it’s economic or population has to be controlled and balanced to maintain stability.

    • America_1st

Kumar, You can have your opinion, but I strongly disagree. That methodology lowers the standard of living and the only ones that win with that mentality are the corporations. The corporations are destroying this country and the government is letting them as they both get richer.
Immigrants receiving low pay will need two fulltime jobs to make ends meet and I’ll guarantee at some point, you’ll just run out gas. Along with that the American standard of living is dropping lock a rock and the college graduate of today will be paying the huge student loans will in to the future on half the pay that he though he’d make. Now if you’re an illegal immigrant, you probably couldn’t care less, but if you’re a born American that loves this country, then America’s stability should be your first priority. As a country, America has always been generous, but if America isn’t strong, we won’t even be able to help ourselves.

I stopped going there when I lost count of the number incorrect orders I received… But it’s not the illegal immigrants fault because he or she doesn’t understand English satisfactorily, it’s mine for not understanding broken English.

Employers that hire illegal immigrants are doing an injustice to their fellow Americans and you “illegal immigrant” are being used as a corporate pawn. While the rich executives get richer and the American middle class standard of living is decreasing, you “illegal immigrant” will eventually lose your job as Americans start to realize the only way to combat corporate America is stop buying from them and buy from local stores owned by Americans that do not hire illegal immigrants. It is actually coming to that.

And by the way, you can pick my tomatoes if that’s what you aspire to do, but a machine washes my car during the winter for $5… no illegal immigrant required. I wash it myself during the summer.

And last, if you want to become an American citizen… and want learn the language… and want to contribute to the economy and society… and want to ASSIMILATE to the American culture… then contact the US immigration department. That’s the only way to legally come to and become part of America.

I WOULD MUCH RATHER PAY 5,0000 DOLLARS TO KEEP MY ILLEGAL WIFE IN AMERICA THAN TO BE SEPARATED FROM HER FOR TEN YEARS. MY MWIFE HAS A LOVING FAMILY THAT WOULD DO ANYTHING TO MAKE HER LEGAL. IF DEPORTED SHE WOULD LEAVE BEHING HER USC HUSBAND AND THREE USC CHILDREN. GOD SPEED OBAMA IN BRINGING AMNESTY TO AMERICA!

MIND IT WE R LOSING JOBS NOT BCOS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT BCOS OF 12MILLION PEOPLE DONT HAVE INSURANCE , CARS
AND HOUSE IF THEY SPEND ALL THAT MONEY TOWARDS THIS NESAARY THING THEN YOU WILL HAVE BETTER ATTITUDE AND IF ILLEGAL PEOPLE BECOME LEGAL THEN THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO WORK FOR $5 PER AS THEY WILL HAVE MORE OVER HEAD AND MORE RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS THE NATION

No one wants you to split up your family. If you love your wife or husband, then do what’s right for your family and return with them to Mexico.
And now you might understand why Americans are angry, as they can’t afford to work for $5 an hour either. Illegal immigrants have reduced the American standard of living by accepting these low paying jobs and now you want higher pay. But don’t you get it? That’s why these law breaking employers hired you in the first place… to save money.

Is funny to see how people are so ignorant and have no idea of what they are talking about..
Immigration reform means a change on the immigration laws, and amnesty means official pardon for political offenses so theres is a big difference between an immigration reform and amnesty…illegal immigrants pay taxes believe it or not! Did you know that IRS together with the government provide a number, ITIN, that let illegal immigrants pay taxes:)…is not illegal immigrants fault that we are in a recession! the war and worrying about other countries freedoms is why we are in this situation right now!

    • trini

trini say love thy neighbour as the creator say, pass amnesty for your neighbours, and see the power of the creator change the downfall of america and make it RISE untill he decend on earth.peace….

I don’t know if anyone is claiming illegal Immigrants are solely responsible for the recession, but the fact is that 20-million immigrants are here illegally.
Many born Americans stand firm on enforcing current immigration laws, do not support immigration reform of any kind and are against Amnesty… period.

Though you defined immigration reform and amnesty, you clearly misunderstood the fact that amnesty is being coupled to immigration reform.

And last, the tax dollars that illegal immigrants pay, doesn’t make up for the services that are drained. Those services are meant for American citizens that have paid into the system for years.

With new studies showing that nearly half of undocumented households being families with children, it is simply not sensible to talk about sending these people “home.” They have been living here, having children here, and making the United States their “homes.” I think we need to welcome them with a comprehensive immigration reform package, and I believe that President Obama will push for this with all his might. It is the right thing to do, and he is morally driven more than politically driven, I believe. Immigration reform is the morally right thing to do. And, I believe, it is in the best economic and political interests for the United States. We need young, energetic workers to keep the goods and services we demand — and will pay for — in place.
